Duties: The commission is directed to study, report on, and make recommendations concerning the current pattern of local government structure and its viability; the powers and functions of local governments, including fiscal powers; the allocation of state and local fiscal resources; the relationship between and among local governments and the state; the role of the state as creator of local governmental entities; and relationship improvement between state and local governments.
Number of Members: 25
Compensation: Private members receive seventy-five dollars ($75.00) per day per diem; Legislative members receive their per diem for each meeting held when the Legislature is not in session.
Appropriations: FY 2022-23: $164,600.00. The commission is authorized to apply for, contract for, receive and expend for its purposes any appropriations or grants from the state, its political subdivisions, the federal government, or any other source, public or private. Political subdivisions of the state are authorized to appropriate funds to the commission to share in the cost of its operations, and may furnish staff personnel to the commission. In addition to any funds appropriated by the general assembly to the commission, the commission is authorized to receive annual allocations of funds from the Tennessee State Revenue Sharing Act, 67-9-102(b)(3).
Meeting Schedule: Quarterly; approximately eight (8) hours per meeting.
